Meet Alan Kinsey, Potter
Alan is a Des Moines area native, now residing in West Des Moines. He studied art and ceramics in school and understudied former Des Moines area artist, Jack Noah. While his work is primarily pottery, he is also a hobbyist photographer, likes to paint, create canvas sculptures, and whimsical paper mache` creatures.
Alan has his work shown in a few local galleries and can be found selling
his wares at local farmers' markets, and art shows. As a disabled
artist, who suffers from arthritis he is a working member of VSA Arts of
Iowa program and Metro Arts Alliance. In VSA, Alan works in the Arts for
Children program and frequently spends time in a classroom setting with public
school children around the State of Iowa.
The multi-colored design featured on many of Kinsey's pieces is a 'doodle'
he has done since Jr. High (back in the days of Peter Max). Alan says, "I like
color. We've seen earth tone stoneware for 50 years. People seem to
like the design, but it's so time consuming to apply... It seems to have
taken on a life of it's own."
Alan likes to think he is decorating the gardens of Iowa, "one ceramic
mushroom at a time". He sells a variety of shapes and colors of these
unique items. An avid gardener himself like all of his work, he considers
it a labor of love.
